As part of the 50th Anniversary of Ashita no Joe, Megalo Box has arrived to bring the brutal grittyness of boxing to our season. Pugilists in the near future compete using mechanical aids known as Gears. The company that created Gears wants to showcase their product in a tournament called Megalonia.
Megalo Box follows a young skilled fighter named Junk Dog, who is making a living throwing fights but longs for a chance to really use his talent in the ring. His partner, Gansaku Nanbu, knows that Junk Dog can fight, but also knows he can never truly compete because he isn't a citizen. A twist of fate one night causes Junk Dog to run into Yukiko Shirato, whose company created Gears and the Megalonia tournament (open to citizens), and the owner of the current champion, Yuuri. JD wastes no time leaving a lasting impression on Yuuri, which will change his career drastically. Watching this we found ourselves reminiscing about Cowboy Bebop and Akira. We think this is a solid pick for fans that enjoy the grittyness of Cowboy Bebop and the animation style of Akira.
